Liberal Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay MP said he’s delighted to announce today that a Guy government has committed to returning the $160 million Country Roads and Bridges Program if elected to government in November.
“This vital funding will help to fix our country roads and save lives.” Mr Ramsay said.
One of the first actions by the city-centric Labor Government when elected in 2014 was to axe the $160 million Country Roads and Bridges Program. Since then our roads have been literally falling apart.
The Liberals will restore the program and provide $1 million to each of Victoria’s 40 rural councils every year for four years to fix our roads. This is the first major funding announcement for our regional roads as we lead up to the November election.
The recently tabled report of ENRRDC (the joint-parliamentary committee Environment Natural Resources Regional Development) supported the return of this popular roads funding program that greatly assisted local councils in their endeavours to make our roads safer.
People in rural Victoria are over-represented in the road toll. 156 lives were lost on roads in rural Victoria in 2017 compared to 102 on roads in Melbourne.
The Liberals have been listening to local people and know how concerned they are about the poor condition of our country roads. We need high quality safe roads and rural and regional infrastructure that all Victorian deserve.
Only The Liberals understand how important it is to invest in our country roads.
If elected in November we will bring back The Liberals Country Roads and Bridges Program to fix country roads and save country lives.
