The Andrews Government must do everything in its power to stop Geelong from losing the $5 billion dollar Land 400 combat vehicle project to South Australia. Dan Andrews has been asleep at the wheel, while the Weatherill Government has pledged tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer assistance to secure the lucrative contract to build 225 next generation armed combat vehicles.
While Dan Andrews has been busy fighting our CFA volunteers, South Australia has cleverly put together an attractive investment defence sector package, leaving Geelong likely to miss out altogether.
Victoria has recently lost several significant Federal Government infrastructure projects to other states and it would be a real slap in the face for the Geelong community if South Australia, already successful with a $50 billion submarine contract, secured this one too.
Geelong has the skilled workforce at the ready and a manufacturing industry with a proven track record, but unfortunately the Andrews Government is too lazy, too disinterested or too unprepared to compete with South Australia on this important project.
The Coalition’s federal and state MPs are fighting hard with city leaders to help Geelong win the contract, but unfortunately a late scramble by Dan Andrews might be all too late. Having only just staffed the much-heralded procurement office in Geelong, we are way behind the eight ball.
I urge the Andrews Government to do everything in its power to secure the $5 billion land combat vehicle project for Geelong, which would be a huge economic and strategic boost for the city and region.
